The focus of this article is the study of the Russian language in the modern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. The article examines the history of the emergence of the Russians in Xinjiang, the data on their descendants who now live there and the spheres of the Russian language use in modern Xinjiang. The purpose of this article is to analyze the characteristics of the Russian language functioning in the modern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China in connection with the spheres of the use of the Russian language, which is under language contact. The material for the analysis were scientific historical sources about the appearance of the Russians in Xinjiang, linguistic literature about Russian emigrants and their descendants as well as the speech recordings of the descendants of Russian emigrants made during the research expedition in Gulja and Urumqi in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China in July 2018.
