The article reviews the most important trends in studying the works by A. P. Chekhov, starting with lifetime comments on the works of the writer and finishing with modern trends in national Chekhov studies. Each of Chekhoviana stages has its peculiarities: having started with critical comments and reviews, Chehkov studies have gradually be- come one of the most powerful scientific fields of literature science. The world of the writer attracts the attention not only of specialists studying the issues of style, method, poetics, but also scientists of re- lated fields - philosophy, psychology, linguistics. In Chekhov studies of recent years some questions bringing the Chekhov legacy to the new level have been updated.
