Annotation:
The article explores the lexical units of Buryat dialects, namely borrowed from the Russian language names of potatoes, which indirectly indicate the time of settlement of the Baikal region by Russian people. The words kartofel’ ‘potato’ and colloquial kartoshka ‘potato’ were established in the Russian language only by the beginning of the XIX century, before that, used the name zemljanoe jabloko ‘potato’. Borrowed Russian words and stable com- binations from the Buryat language may indicate the relative time of penetration this words in Western and Eastern Buryat dialects: zemljanoe jabloko  jaabal, jaabalha ‘potato’ in the XVII‒XVIII centurys and kartoshka  hartaabha, hortoshho ‘potato’ in the XIX‒XX centurys. It is suggested that the word jaabal ‘potato’ were also used sporadically in the Eastern dialects of the Buryat language in the early twentieth century (according to the Electronic corpus of the Buryat language). Influence on the use of the word yabal ‘potato’ in Buryatia could have migration of the Buryat population from pre-Baikal to Trans- baikalia.
