Rural areas in Zabaikalsky Krai, as well as in many other subjects of Russia, have faced numerous socioeconomic difficulties in recent decades. The article focuses on the challenges and opportunities of regions’ agricultural development, it is aimed at analyzing the problems and possible prospects for predominantly agricultural regions. Zabaikalsky Krai being one of the most depressed regions in Russia in this sector has unlimited opportunities for economic growth. The article describes major challenges in agriculture caused by the regional specifics. It also analyzes the development prospects for the coming years and the role of government and private sector in the economy. The article provides information that allows us to conclude that Zabaikalsky Krai have promising development opportunities in agriculture.
