The article demonstrates Russian-North Korean rapprochement from the perspective of the DPRK’S own interests. It is suggested that the rapprochement primarily reflects the DPRK’S adaptation to a changing international environment. Russia serves as a kind of insurance, expanding the space for foreign policy maneuver and reducing the DPRK’s critical dependence on China. At the same time, it is emphasized that the activation of relations with Russia does not signify a turn away from China: The Chinese direction remains a priority. The DPRK’s main objective is to reduce its high dependence on China without weakening its priority partnership with it.
