Characteristics of the Chahar Dutong Shilinga in the History of the Qing Empire (Based on the Biographical Materials from Qing Shi Gao)

Based on an analysis of the biography in Qing Shi Gao and other sources, the article presents an overview of the activities of the Chahar dutong Shilinga. Shilinga held the position of Chahar dutong for nearly nine years – the longest term among all Chahar dutongs. His tenure coincided with the Qing government’s campaigns against the Taiping movement and other anti-Qing armed groups. The biographical materials on Shilinga from Qing Shi Gao contain details of the historical events of that period, allowing for a description of the role of the Chahar dutong in the history of the Qing Empire. As dutong of a Mongolian territory, Shilinga spent most of his time in Inner China, commanding Chahar troops. The materials presented in the article expand existing knowledge about the rotation of dutongs in Outer China and the specific features of certain offices and titles.
