Higher Education in Japan: Historical Experience and Contemporary Challenges

The history of Japan’s higher education development is a complex process reflecting the country’s social, cultural, and political transformations. The Japanese higher education system has evolved from traditional academic institutions into a modern, multi- tiered complex that serves the interests of all stakeholders, including students, employers, and the state. Japan has actively engaged in the internationalization and digitalization of higher education, which has become a primary driver of qualitative changes in workforce training for the modern labor market. At the same time, this educational system faces a suite of internal and external challenges that must be addressed. The article provides a brief analysis of the historical features of Japanese higher education development, the experience gained, and the effective practices that have enabled the country to create a competitive model of higher education capable of responding to global challenges.
