The study compares the economic indicators of the Republic of Buryatia with sim- ilar indicators of regions recognized as subjects of the Russian Federation with socio- economic underdevelopment. The following were used as the main indicators of develop- ment: the number of permanent population, indicators of the population structure, GRP per capita, unemployment rate, the share of population with monetary incomes below the re- gional subsistence level in the total population, investments in fixed assets (without budget investments), indicators of population migration. The study period was five years from 2016 to 2020. The analysis showed that the values of the economic indicators of the Republic of Buryatia are between the minimum and maximum, and this is specific for the group of re- gions with underdevelopment. So, the Republic of Buryatia can be included in this group of regions.
