The article analyzes the socio-economic effects obtained from the extraction of minerals in the northern regions of the Russian Federation, expressed in the gross regional product, taxes, and employment. The regions with the highest share of mining in the struc- ture of gross domestic product include Nenets Autonomous Okrug, the Komi Republic, Khanty-Mansiysk and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, the Sakha Republic, Magadan Oblast and Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. Mining enterprises play an important role in the formation of budgets of various levels, employment of the population, wages. In the oil and gas regions the mineral extraction tax send to the federal budget significantly exceeds their budget revenues. Mining wages are significantly higher than the regional average, but the standard of living remains relatively low. It is necessary to further expand the resource base, involve new deposits in the industrial turnover and increase the volume of mining opera- tions for more efficient use of the mineral resource potential of the northern regions. At the same time, it is expedient to redistribute the mineral extraction tax and thereby increase re- gional budget revenues with their subsequent targeted use in geological exploration and solving socio-economic problems, including the development of alternative non-primary industries that deserve great attention due to the gradual depletion of mineral reserves.
