The article deals with regulatory and legal framework for development of interaction between Russia and Mongolia and its current state. The emphasis has been placed on a new stage of bilateral cooperation, associated with the resumption of Russia’s interest to the countries of South-East Asia. The shift of the vector of Russia's strategic partnership to the East, as well as the sanctions applied by Western countries and the USA have a positive impact on development of Russian relations with Mongolia, which is an active participant of the regional logistics network today and can become a transport corridor between Asia and Europe. We have analyzed the trade turnover of Mongolia and Russia over the past five years. The Russian Federation ranks second after China in the import structure of Mongolia. The PRC is the main trading partner for both countries. The analysis has revealed a sharp imbalance in the trade and economic relations of Russia and Mongolia in favor of China, and identified the problems that impede cooperation between the countries in economic sphere. We have outlined the long-term trends for cross-border cooperation, and gave the recommendations on increasing the effectiveness of further development of Mongolian-Russian relations.
