Annotation:
The article defines the main criteria of information economy and the stages of its de- velopment; analyzes the situation in information and communication sector, the pro- cess of state and municipal government bodies' informatization and the innovative po- tential of Russia from the perspective of transition to information economy. It has been shown that the processes of informatization are aimed at increasing the efficiency of traditional branches of the economy, while the share of educational segment and the share of companies engaged in innovative activity in the Russian economy are current- ly declining. Nevertheless, implementation of information technology in Russia is in- creasing. This allows us to conclude that Russia today is at the stage of mass introduc- tion of information technologies in the traditional industries of industrial economy, and lack of qualitative changes in the structure of production over the past five years.
