Annotation:
The article reviews the novel by Nina Sadur “The Garden”, in the perception of which the reader encounters significant difficulties. A complex narrative structure (narration is conducted from three different persons), the use of the “editing” technique in the composition, and the violation of the plot greatly complicate the understanding of the writer’s intention. The reader can see not just the course of events but how the main characters live through these events, and discovers their emotional state, their reaction to the coldness of the outside world. The image of the garden appears in the novel as the embodiment of chaos spilled in the world. A detailed analysis of the image of the garden in the novel shows its connection with images of fire and cold, with space surrounded by chaos of the outside world. The internal state of the garden bears the influence of the surrounding world. This is no longer a garden like the Garden of Eden, a paradise or a cultural center, presented in Pushkin’s poetry and in Russian literature, but a little garden, a shelter for homeless people and animals.
Keywords:
image of garden; image of fire; cold space; symbol of loneliness.
