For the first time, this article analyzes the second and final novel by Andrey Igumnov (1959–2021) "Cuckoo Children," which is unusual for Buryat literature and created in a post-modernist technique. The concept of the human being is examined, observing the controversy between two antinomical elements — the constant inclination towards the idea of the Über-mensch with its arrogance and the sense of inferiority from being immersed in everyday life, ordinariness with its complexes. The main problem of the hero's life is defined as the problem of identification, both as a purely individual, personal issue and as the problem of identification within the conditional family of Mother and her "cuckoo children," born of different fathers and left in her care by the fathers. The peculiarity of the connection between these manifestations is noted — as if they interpenetrate each other, the absence of full autonomy of existence, non-separateness. Both elements strive for their limit, correlating with the features of the chro-notope as well as with the plot-compositional structure.
