THE SYMBOLIC TRIAD OF URBAN MYTHS IN THE BORIS PASTERNAK’S NOVEL “DOCTOR ZHIVAGO”

The article defines the dominant position of Moscow image in the novel "Doctor Zhiva- go" by Boris Pasternak: the plot of self-identity and story of the сharacter are objectified in the descriptions of the catastrophes experienced by the eternal city. We consider created in this context urban myths as stable components of the novel structure with formal content. The underlying archaic mythological paradigms (the myth of Babylon, the myth of the lost city, the myth of the city of Kitezh) and appeared in the early 20th century the myth of the tram are revealed. The article analyzes ways to modify tradi- tional myths into the author's myths. We have determined the nature and functions of the mythologems involved in myth-making, contributing to development of urban my- thopoetic situations. The role of literary pretexts (Bryusov, Blok, Mandelshtam) in creation of the symbolic triad of urban myths, objectifying the plot of main character’s self- identity is emthesized.
