The article deals with the problem of functional words or phrases regulating the discursive process between the sender of information and its recipient. The object of study is the pragmatic potential of such English discourse markers used in oral spontaneous speech, as so, why, wait, because, but, though, maybe, all right, now. The research is based on the episode from the American Comedy series "Modern family". The series narrates about the everyday life of three families, related to each other by ties of kinship. Scenes of the series are as close to reality as possible, this gives grounds to assert that the discourse markers can be taken as guarantors of alive speech, in the series we see plenty of them. Verbal discourse, namely spontaneous speech (the characters did not have time to prepare a conversation) has been studied, since the nature of discourse markers is clearly manifested in spontaneous speech. The research allows us to conclude that the multifunctional character of discourse markers is not limited only by the level of sentence; they also perform semantic, discursive and pragmatic functions. We can find them in many grammatical forms: conjunctions, connective adverbs, expressions of greeting and farewell, etc. Another important problem is the transfer of discourse markers to the target language, as it allows achieving a more complete and accurate result. Sometimes ignoring of discourse markers leads to confusion and to inadequate translation, as a result some problems of intercultural nature appears. Thus, sterling language skills involve mastering all the elements of speech, including discourse markers. In this regard, further study of the nature, characteristics and functions of discourse markers in related speech genres is very relevant.
