In the article we have made an attempt to consider the problems of using the educational potential of academic disciplines in the process of students’ professional training in terms of financial disciplines. The essential characteristics of financial disciplines, their role in formation of financial thinking are considered. The possibility of actualizing the educational potential of financial disciplines through the content of the studied disciplines, the choice of teaching methods are substantiated. It has been shown that the level of goal-setting in educational practice is to a certain extent connected with insufficient attention of researchers to this issue. We have systematized and highlighted the main problems of goal-setting: the connection of goals with results; harmony and balance of goals at different levels; specific methods and forms of harmonization of different-level and multidirectional goals within the framework of a unified education system; relationship between the orientation of educational goals on changing the learner and the need to involve him in setting and selecting goals. The ways of strengthening educational functions in studying financial disciplines through the content of the studied disciplines, and choice of teaching methods are suggested.
