The article emphasizes the role of the first work in the writer's biography on the material of the debut works of three famous Buryat writers — B. Dugarov, G. Bashkuev,
A. Mukhraev. Close attention to their debuts allows the researcher to review the founda- tion of the subsequent process of writer's personality building up. In addition, the first works often served as a writers' pass to the status of a member of the USSR / Russia Writers' Union, and allowed them to participate and win in various literary contests. The stories "For Sea-buckthorn Berries" by G. Bashkuyev, "The Watchman" by A. Mukhraev and verses from the first collection of lyric by B. Dugarov "The Golden Saddle" are ana- lyzed. The very complexity of creating a scientific biography, which takes into account fluctuations in the assessments of many phenomena in the national artistic culture, dic- tates the need for close attention to the artist's first steps. In addition, reviewing the debut works allows to get to the questions about the role of ancestry in the writer's formation, about the significance of journalistic experience, about the bizarre connection between biography and fiction, and finally about the emerging trends in the literary development of the 1970s–1980s.
