One of the most important sectors of Mongolian traditional economic activities is hunting for meat. To carry out the comparative historical analysis of hunting terminology we studied the terms of the modern Khalkha-Mongolian, Buryat and Kalmyk, as well as Old-Mongolian written languages, reflecting both the names of hunting objects, and the names of hunting weapons and methods. All the material of the Mongolian and Turkic languages was compared to identify the parallels in the terms; the etymological analysis of the revealed parallels was carried out. The research showed that the Mongol tribes, for a long time being engaged in hunting in their ancestral homeland, had developed a fairly extensive hunting terminology. It was preserved in their languages after they moved to the west and assimilated a part of the local Turkic tribes. Mongols took over from Turki not only skills of nomadic steppe cattle breeding, but also the experience of hunting in the new geographical conditions. As a result the Mongolian traditional hunting terminology was enriched by some Turkic terms.
