Annotation:
The article analyzes the interaction of civilized and barbaric societies as an in- evitable political and cultural process throughout world history. We believe that the technological and political level of development of a civilized society makes it invulner- able to external barbaric aggression as long as the spiritual unity of civilization is pre- served. A spiritual crisis leads to the emergence and expansion of the ranks of internal barbarians — citizens who socially belong to civilization, but do not share its values. They make society defenseless against external enemies, since they use the political and economic mechanisms of civilization only for personal and particular purposes. We have defined the concepts of civilization and barbarism based on the studies of the Russian philosopher N. V. Motroshilova, and adopted factual material from the works of Western European and Eastern historians.
