Annotation:
Aristotle, defining metaphor as the transfer of a word with a changed meaning, pointed to both the process of metaphorization and its result, and gave grounds to believe that his works anticipated the comprehension of metaphor, which is characteristic of the philosophy of language of the second half of the 20th century. An appeal to the works of philosophers who followed the Stagirite, starting from the Middle Ages and ending with the 19th century, shows that the metaphor was considered as a verbal mean that must be taken into account when understanding the text. Based on this, we have come to the con- clusion that the heuristic aspect of metaphor in the teachings of Aristotle may seem obvi- ous in the context of the cognitive paradigm in the study of metaphor, while until the 20th century this aspect did not come into the view of researches of Aristotle's legacy.
