To address the practical issue of how historical subjectivity is formed, it is crucial to determine the elementary and ultimate unit of human consciousness. This requires identi- fying the quality that characterizes the simplest phenomenon of specifically human consciousness in the Hegelian sense of quality. This ultimate or minimum unit of con- sciousness is what the author seeks to define. To achieve this, we need to draw on the entire history of philosophical thought on human consciousness, including the concepts of English and French empiricism. These concepts not only rely on a sensualistic approach to individu- al consciousness and cognition, but they also push it to its limits. The correct definition of this starting point for the formation of historical subjectivity depends on our understanding of previous philosophical traditions. In this article, it is explored how New European empir- icism tackled this question.
