The article reviews the problem of functional homonymy, which is considered from the standpoint of semantic-functional approach. We study homocomplex видно, which include an adjective, the category of state, and a modal word. These functional homonyms differ by categorial meaning, syntax function, syntagmatic properties and semantic functions. We argue that an adjective and the category of state define the speaker as a subject of sensory perception (an observer) and ex- press the semantics of reliability; a modal word determines the speaker as a subject of consciousness and expresses the semantics of doubt. The analysis of functional homonyms allows us to draw attention to semantic and functional sides of linguis- tic units. The materials of Russian National Corpus give evidence of widespread use of the lexeme видно in Russian speech.
