The beginning of the 21st century was marked by strengthening of religion in all spheres of human life — culture, policy, economy. Based on Russian and foreign theories of secularization and desecularization we investigate the processes of secu- larization and desecularization. Secularization is a passed stage for the modern world and Russia. Modern society is involved in the process of desecularization, associated with the rise of religious. Apparently, this is explained by the fact that secular ideology cannot solve the problems the society faces. It should be noted that desecularization is a contradictory phenomenon: on the one hand, religion has deep cultural and historical roots, on the other, it penetrates into all spheres of so- ciety, and this can lead to inter-confessional conflicts, religious extremism and in- tolerance. These factors contribute to desecularization of the cycle of sociocultural movement after its secularization.
