Annotation:
Many prominent personalities and religious leaders, following the Buddhist ethics of non-violence (ahimsa), compassion and equality, dedicated their lives to serve people in the name of freedom and happiness. By synthesizing European ideas with Indian traditions and Buddhist principles, Mahatma Gandhi, Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru and other Indian leaders fought against religious ri- valries, violence and inequality in their country. Jawaharlal Nehru had come to use the philosophy of non-violence in his strategy for social change. M. Gandhi pro- moted the principle of ahimsa to all spheres of life. His non-violent resistance movement satyagraha had an immense impact on India and influenced the leaders of various civil and political rights movements all over the world.
