The article was prepared for the 85th anniversary of the Department of Russian Language and General Linguistics at the Buryat State University, the founder of the formation of philological education in the Republic of Buryatia, the large scientific and educational center of the region, which trained thousands of teachers of the Russian language and literature, writers and poets, researchers and employees of state power and administration. The work is devoted to the de- scription of the main scientific directions of the staff of the department, acquaints readers with the stages of the development of linguistic thought, characterized by a painstaking accumula- tion of new knowledge, a change in the scope of research, the formation of new ideas and con- cepts in modern conditions. Particular attention is paid to the preservation and maintenance of the traditions of the department for the classical preparation of students of the philological fac- ulty (now the Institute of Philology and Mass Communications) and the training of young sci- entists. Materials of personal memories of the veterans of the department and the oldest em- ployees of the university are widely used in the article.
