The article deals with the issues of translation teaching in view of problem-based learning. Modern Russian society needs specialists, which are able to solve problems through creative thinking, improve skills and acquire necessary additional knowledge. From this point translation is a process of problem solution. Ability to see a problem in the process of translation requires a high level of linguistic and extralinguistic know- ledge for correct transmission of text meanings.
Problem learning is considered in the present article as didactic system, which central element is a problem situation defining cogitative and speech acts. We consider sepa- rate stages of translation and offer the system of exercises for training 1-2-year stu- dents aimed at development of creativity and critical thinking.
Problem-based approach in learning translation as a heuristic type of education has the sufficient methodical potential for teaching students to solve problems on the basis of creative thinking, to improve skills and acquire knowledge in their professional activity.
