Development of the idea of environmental responsibility of business in Russia ac- tualizes the problem of theoretical understanding of the concept, which has not yet found a single accepted interpretation either in international or in Russian practice. The study is based on the theoretical and practical works, domestic and foreign literary sources in the field of environmental responsibility. The article considers and groups various theoretical approaches to the concept of environmental responsibility of business according to direc- tions, identifies its main principles. We have proposed the definition of the environmental responsibility of business as its readiness for voluntary and conscious acceptance of addi- tional (enshrined in law) environmental obligations in all processes of economic activity through the development and implementation of an environmental policy based on the prin- ciples of sustainable development. We are of the opinion that in order to form the environ- mental responsibility of business in Russia, it is impotant to pay attention to international best practices in applying various strategies and tools for complying with environmental re- quirements and introducing environmentally responsible business behavior, which tradition- ally include regulatory tools, information methods, financial and non-financial incentives.
