In the last decade, the course towards diversification of the rural economy in Russia is associated with the development of non-agricultural activities; thus, the importance of rural tourism has been raised to realization of its decisive role in diversification, creation of alternative forms of employment/self-employment and sustainable development of rural areas. The article analyzes the diversification opportunities of the rural economy based on rural tourism. A review of literary sources indicates the relevance and popularity of rural tourism, as well as its problems and prospects for the development. Based on a critical analysis of the concept of “rural tourism”, we have revealed that agritourism concepts, which constitute the essence of agricultural production diversification, are entrenched in the terminology of the Law on Tourism Activities. The article discusses contradictory situations caused by the personalized status of the agricultural goods producer as a key subject of rural tourism, and suggests ways to resolve them. The study shows that rural tourism is one of the most important concepts of tourism development in Russia. Currently, the legal framework for regulating rural tourism is being formed, and the state is implementing various support measures.
