The article deals with the mechanism of formation of state-Islamic relations in Russian so- ciety since the period of transformation. It is asserted that state-Islamic relations had the specific features at different stages of their socio-cultural and historical development. The article reveals the contradictory nature of relations between the state and Muslim organiza- tions, which is associated with the dogmatic features of the religion, its tradition, sacral- ized norms, and the mentality of adherents. Islam has a special political significance, this is due to its traditional important consolidating and integrating function in Muslim society.
