Annotation:
The article describes the hesitative marker ETO SAMOE (ES) in Russian literary texts and the ways of translating it into Chinese. This pragmatic marker has a high frequency of occurrence in oral spontaneous speech, it is used by speakers unconsciously and reflexively at the level of speech automatism. ES mainly acts as a hesitative marker in its real speech use. The material of the present research consisted of 39 uses of ES from the main subcorpus of the Russian National Corpus in two of its functional varieties: “pure” hesitative and hesitative-search marker. The search result of using this marker are not the same in specific contexts. Sometimes, ES in some contexts is not the only expression of the speak- er's hesitation (“in company” with other hesitative markers togo, kak ego, etc.). Three ways of translating this marker were found in Chinese translations: (1) ES → significant units; (2) omission of the ES; (3) ES → corresponding Chinese marker. Taking into account the pragmatic factor and applying discourse analysis are important conditions for achieving adequacy in translation.
