Annotation:
The article considers one of the outstanding texts of the Silver Age in the aspect of in- terlude; based on the analysis of scenic and screen versions of the novel we investigate poetics of the work in correlation with the language of theatre and cinema. It is sug- gested that, despite the carnivalization of life in F. Sologub’s "The Petty Devil", "theatr- ical" language as a whole is not close to the novelist’s manner, which can be described as an onyric one, whereas the conventionality of cinema with its conscious reconstruc- tion of the dream land is more in line with the writer's idea of reality. We have con- cluded that interlude analysis allows clarifying many features of the style of any literary source: literature recognizes itself in the mirror of theater or cinema.
