СONCEPT OF NATIONAL CHARACTER

The article deals with the methods, theories and criteria for studying the concept of na- tional character, which were used at the turn of 19th and 20th centuries. We trace the history of studying the national character, the ways that determine differences between ethnic groups. The concept of national character is defined in political, psychological, philosophical and sociological terms. We describe the elements that form a complex system of studying national character and provide an opportunity to identify the dis- tinctive features of a certain ethnic group in the process of interaction with the basic individual characteristics of the personality; reveal the significance of the concepts "soul" and "spirituality of the nation" in the study of national character. It has been emphasized the importance of reflecting spirituality, cultural forms and national tradi- tions in the existence of national character. We highlight the relevance of studying na- tional character and use of this category in relation to modern society.
