The Department of Geology was established in 1992 as part of the Buryat branch of Novosibirsk State University. In fact, it was an attempt to "replicate" the successful experience of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk Akademgorodok. The opening of the Buryat branch was supported by both the leadership of the SB RAS and the leadership of the republic. There was academic science and production in Ulan-Ude, there were not enough "cadres", i.e. the university, which served as the starting point for the opening of a branch of the NSU. In terms of the richness and diversity of mineral raw materials — deposits of rare, precious and non-ferrous metals, non-metallic minerals, the Republic of Buryatia is one of the richest in Russia. That is why, in the post-war years, large-scale geological survey, prospecting and geological exploration works were launched here, and in 1973 a Geological Institute was established as part of the SB AS.
