In the modern context of transitioning to the new federal state education stand- ards for general education and federal working programs in the subject, studying modern approaches to teaching handicraft is relevant. The article is aimed at analyzing the problem of creating conditions for the transition to the Federal State Education Standards for Primary General Education. The article examines changes in the "Handicraft" subject area and the possibilities of preparing students and teachers for the transition to the Federal State Education Standards. As a result of the research, the authors have identified goals, tasks, and principles of working with students within the framework of receiving handicraft education. The article also recognizes the problem of teaching and educating children in handicraft lessons and possible solutions based on examples from secondary schools in Ulan-Ude and the Republic of Buryatia. Special attention is paid to the forms and methods of working with students in handicraft lessons and extracurricular activities, which allow for the development of creative and communicative abilities and address the problem of children's socialization. Moreover, the attention is paid to the important factor of preparing future handicraft teachers, problems in higher education in training pedagogical personnel, and training working teachers in modern information technologies through professional de- velopment courses at the Buryat Republican Institute for Education Policy.
