Annotation:
The article deals with the dilemma of “free” vs “accurate” translation in the framework of "formal" and "informal" (“author”) translation paradigms, using the popular comedy TV- show “The Big Bang Theory” as an example. The following article outlines positive and negative sides of both translation strategies. "Successful translation" is viewed as implementation of the film’s pragmatic potential, while such implementation depends to a great extent on the translation strategy — either oriented towards "accuracy" or "freedom". Translation is seen as a "ray" passing through the prism of the communicative triad: communicative goal, function (impact) and effect. In addition, the article presents the views of prominent translation theorists who discussed the "cornerstone" translation problem in their works and shed light on the ways of achieving adequacy in film translation.
Keywords:
“free translation”; “accurate translation”; adequateness; equivalency; formal and informal translation; author translation; film translation; communicative effect; pragmatic potential.
