E. Passov’s communicative foreign language education principles state that teaching grammar must serve communicative goals [Passov, 1991]. This means that the grammar competences learners are taught should be functional, or useful during real au- thentic communication. This paper agrees that nowadays-foreign language teaching tends to follow communicative approaches and grammar instruction must correspond to them likewise. The paper introduces Processing Instruction [VanPatten, 1996] as a teaching method, which allows learners to process and acquire second language gram- mar within a communicative classroom. Detailed examples of classroom activities are given to illustrate the use of the method. It is pointed out that implementing Processing Instruction would be consistent with the main principles of Passov’s conceptual frame- work of foreign language teaching, and might enhance its perception phase. Thus, it is expected that perception phase enhancement might lead to a better comprehension of the target grammar, and more empirical evidence needs to be shown.
