The results of a study of the interrelation between reading skill indicators and reading speed of 1st grade schoolchildren is presented in the article. This study is relevant in con- nection with the request of customers of educational services (parents) to teach children conscious reading. Reading is one of the main meta-subject skills that children should learn in primary school. But in practice, all participants in the pedagogical process empha- size only one component of the reading skill — speed. In our study, we tested to what extent it was possible to rely on reading speed in assessing the reading skill of children. The sample included 67 people. The study had two stages. At the first of them, students were diagnosed using the L.A. Yasyukova reading skill test and measuring the speed of reading. At the second stage of the study, interrelation between the level of reading skill and reading speed was assessed using statistical processing methods. There was a notice- able direct correlation between the indicators, but upon further research by the method of grouping and analysis, it was found that a high reading speed does not always correlate with a high level of reading skill. The difference in the number of children at risk when measuring only reading speed and when measuring the level of reading skill is quite big. In order to avoid further stopping the development of the reading skill level and substitut- ing the reading skill level with the reading speed, recommendations have been worked out for the development and correction of the learning process.
